If you're on cable or satelite for your TV, you can upgrade to a DVR system. It's a box/modem type of thing (as far as I know), that lets you record shows (usually up to 1 gig of space, some have more), without having to use a VCR. It basically turns your TV into something that works much like a VCR. While you're watching a show you can pause it so you can go do whatever. Then, when you come back you can just hit play and it'll pick up where you left off. If you're watching a show and the kids come in and you miss something you can just rewind to rewatch it again and again.
Now, when we watch TV that's not on a DVR we get all twitchy because we don't have the ability to do what we want. XD
The little bit extra it costs is more than worth it!
