On Thursday, Teh Sprog's school had what is called *WACKY HAIR DAY* during which they encourage kids to do up the heads and make a contribution toward whatever fundraiser is currently running (this year it's collecting monies to help rebuild a school in a wartorn region in Africa).
The boy wanted GREEN hair. Knowing how much he hates to have anyone touch his hair I passed the job along to the Middling child and just smiled contentedly from the far end of the house as he whined and simpered as she tugged, styled and told him to stop being a sissy and suck it up.
Sibling lurv.
He was immensely pleased with the results (which worried his father a bit) and announced that next year he wanted PINK! (which worried his father a bit more). The fact that he wants to dress as a girl next Hallowe'en is not something I'm going to mention to Teh Bob until October...although by that time he might want to dress as Rabid alien so why torture the man?
...although it could be fun. ;)
ANYway ~ the child was at a friends yesterday playing ~ there was a rented Wii system and three buddies, whose parents know their addictive natures and refuse to give in to the the video game industry before the kids turn 11, were having a blast. We know full well that this stuff is fun ~ and we don't deny them the chance to play it, but we are well aware the mesmorizing effects of electronic games have on boys and are holding out till the whinging gets to be more than we can stand.
Our sprog has been mum about asking for one, knowing that the day we take him on an extended trip he will end up with a handheld plaything to keep him occupied on the trains/planes and during boring waits. Us adults all agree...sanity trumps luddite-parenting when trapped with a bored 8 -11 year old in small spaces.
Speaking of boys ~ so I'd been carless all day due to ...well it's a weekend and teens are home. So I'd intended to walk over to the friends' house to pick up the sprog (a 12 minute trudge through a snow storm) and go a bit early because I was sure there was going to be gossip and bourbon waiting for me in the kitchen to warm me up.
Just as I was dressing to leave Teh Bob rushes in and hands me his car keys ~ insanely insistant that I drive and very proud of himself for having got me a vehicle to go out in the storm with...there was no arguing out of it.
So I drive there and my friends look over my shoulder at the car and I explain. One of the other friends informs her husband who arrives to drive her and her boys home that he needed to go to my house, bang on the door and drag Teh Bob over so he could be the DD.
Not long afterward, he returns with my husband in tow and then the boys get to gossiping too ~ peach wine starts getting passed around and I decide that my two fingers of Bourbon had been more than enough...turns out that I ended up sober and doing the driving! Not sure how that happened but it sure was fun.
On top of all that I arrived home to find my Middling child had taken it upon herself to shovel the driveway and sidewalk!! Have NO idea what possesed her and I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop (I wonder what she's feeling guilty about?) but it was nice to settle in at 11 pm for a bit of BBC historical drama on DVD instead of hand plowing the drive :)
