It's that time of year again when going to the market means fresh cut, locally grown sunflowers by the armful *^__^*
Yellow ones are okay, but personally I prefer the deep burgundy ones (Velvet Queen) or the brown-tinged Autumn Beauty ~ which I spied behind the table at the farmers market yesterday.
Teh Bob looked at the brown streaked blossoms and remarked that he'd never have thought to buy those...he prefers them brighter.
Mr. blue carnations and green roses has a dubious eye for colour when he's not being typically pedestrian in his choices, IMHO....
ANYway ~ I took the opportunity to play with them in the later afternoon with the camera, and must have been entertaining to watch as I lay on my back on the hard deck, squirming around a vase as sunflowers above my head rained pollen into my eyes and camera lens. >__<
So here we are...Helianthus annum spam:

I was really growly about the glare of the light yesterday but then decided to just embrace it....there is enough shado and dark area in the flowers to play with contrasts...and it did seem to work not to shabbily.
Not the greatest photos but they do give me something to ponder for future shots :)
AND....besides, sunflowers are just fun no matter what.
OH we've had rain aplenty around here....freakish summer that way. I'd send you some if I could. >D
Sunflowers are really hardy so you guys must really be in droughtsville if those hardsrabble darlings are not bothering to grow!
:(
We had a record snowfall in the mountains this past winter so the rivers are running fast and high. With so much water available, it's weird that the governor has declared a state of emergency for drought conditions. 0_o;
HOPEFULLY some is getting through the cracks and to some roots!!
I think with the govenor's order is that it acknowledges that one really good snow season isn't going to fix the drastically overburdened and dropping watertable. It will take years of heavy snowfalls to make a dent in that....and all the indications is that that the North American west is at the begining of a drying cycle that will last a very long time :(
Thanks!
I really have a hard time deciding which one of these I like best...
The colours are stunning, and the glaring light shining through the petals reveals very interesting details ~ they're really beautiful flowers.
I have to agree with you: the plain yellow ones are a bit boring compared to the darker ones. And the effects you managed to capture with your pictures make them even more so...
I might have to pester you for high-res pictures to print, because I seriously think that some of them would look awesome in small square frames on a white wall... *^______^*
Thank you for sharing!
NEXT year *rolls eyes at the garden that never was* I will hopefully grow some of my own. I've done it before they they are just lovely ... a real pick me up. The burgundy ones are too...well named, deep velvety petals :)
If you like any in particular let me know the dimensions you are looking for....sunflower season shall be upon us for a time yet.
Simply amazing. Well done, woman.
