Yep. It's offical...well more official than it has been up to this point.

My first doll of the ball-jointed kind arrived the same day that my mother did, just prior to my leaving for SF. ARGH!!! At least she didn't have to sign for it but still...that meant spiriting the unopened box to a dark corner and waiting a week till I was back and she was gone to open it. Hard to believe I'm 43 and hiding toys that have nothing to do with smex! >D

I don't even want to contemplate her reaction to him...or any of the *cough* others. Teh Bob seems bemused with this new obsession and the girls sardonic but slightly creeped out by it *snort*...ANYway...yeah...I won't bore you with the details beyond the fact that it's been fascinating to unbox the first doll because I really had no idea how I'd react to him.

I teared-up. Seriously...I did not see that reaction coming. He was nothing at ALL what I was expecting but as I mentioned to another bjd-owner...he is 1000 kinds of wonderful. The texture of his limbs? Smooth as satin (blew my mind away that did). Dismiss them all you want but don't look to closely at them, because I really don't think you can be totally immune and once you spot *the one*...you ~ are ~ doomed.

The following are just a few images I managed to snag today when the sun finally came out. I wanted to capture his skin colour and face-up without a flash. Now I've got to choose a fabric to make a kimono out of that compliments his colouring :)

I still have to change his eyes...I have dark ebony ones for him. These glowing red, demonic coals are not quite doing it for me...but I'll get to that later.

  • He's GORGEOUS.
    • Thank-you and I like to think so too.

I think I opened the box and fell in love...*throws hands up in exasperation*...no idea what happened but it's like someone turned on a switch and I suddenly understood doll owners. You get hit by a truck if it's the right one. @__@!!!!
  • Even when I was little I really ddin't play with dolls so I'm kinda scratching my head over all the people on my flist who are so into these BJDs. With the prices and all the goodies you can get yourself and wallet into trouble for them... I hope I never find the *one* that converts me. My computer(s) and accessories are more than enough, thanks! :)

Glad you're enjoying them so much though. People's reactions to their dolls are more fun than the actual doll -- just my opinion. ^^
    • When I think back to being small...while I did sort of play with dolls it wasn't babydolls *gah*...but rather Best of the West cowpoke >D

I also played with Fisher Price playfamily figures (those tiny things) and had elaborate setups, costumes, even calendars and a mail service ....between my characters and my friends. *rolls eyes*.

Hated Barbie because I couldn't relate to her but lordy knows the past few years has seen me collect action figures ...but...you know the problem with this pvc stuff? They are static and boring. LOOK nice....but they just sit/stand there.

So I turned to the Bonsai (obitsu boys) and discovered the fun of actually playing with them. J-doll is a bust. Nice set up but you know...she is as bendy and expressive as a stone...which brings me to bjds....I am without a doubt going to be bouncing between those and the obitsu boys ...both have qualities that amuse me to no end it would seem. :)

OH yeah...the price. Well I seriously think that Japan next year is a no go for me....but at this point I really don't care because I am a wallowing. Probably in a couple of years with Bob and Wil ~ do the trains from one end to the other...but right now I am just wallowing. AND the best part is is that I can now use all this fabric I've accumulated and....

*flaps hands*....ANYway yes...seriously don't look too closely at ANYTHING in Denver when you go because um...yeah it's a money pit like no other I have seen. But then again your geekstuff is probably just as bad >D

My reaction....oh boy. I really really shocked myself. I stare at this guys face and understand now what doll owners talk about bonding. I get MUSHY for gods sake when I look him in the eyes....warm fuzzies x 1000. GAH!!!! HOW CAN THAT BE?! HE'S RESIN!!!
      • Did I tell you I just got a new case for the main tower in the office? I think I squee as much and as loudly over computer stuff as you do over the BJDs. XD

My trip to Denver this week will be interesting. I'm very curious to see if my attitude toward these BJDs will change when I see them right before me or not. I have seen Kiriko_moth's dolphie and played with him for a few minutes a few years ago. As pretty as he was -- nothing sparked. Now, if they had some technology inside them to make them move independently... >:)
        • *an eyebrow crawls upward*...you know you really are just as bad in a different arena >D

You know I've seen these things at Ycon....actually went to a panel and yes....nice stuff (fell in love with the Loveless pair) but seriously didn't think much of them beyond looking at the Iplehouse site every once and a while ...drooling a bit and then moving on.

It's gotten worse this year though....I was really grateful that one boy sold out over there so i could stop visiting...but then a company introduced a limited run of cat-eared people (no human ears) and I succumbed. Xan just said after the umpteenth email with pix of a cat girl..."JUST BUY IT ALREADY!"

          ...HEY...I can blame HER!!!!

As for you falling for them at the DDE...well probably not....I mean really I didn't NEED to have one until THE cat girl showed up. Mind you don't tempt the fates by saying something like that...you KNOW a very clever engineer in Japan is probably perfecting exactly that as we speak *wags finger*....then what are you going to do???
          • ...you know you really are just as bad in a different arena

And that's precisely why I don't need yet another new and expensive obsession. We both know how weak-willed I am to things I want. The manga (in two languages), the anime DVDs, the miscellaneous stuff associated with said series like key chains, cell phone dangles and the like keep a nice hole in my cash flow as it is.

I really don't need to add to my list of *ahem* collectables.

I'm going to go to the doll store in Denver, get some pictures of skin tones for a friend, gawk a bit at *ALL* the pieces-parts for dolls and then get the HELL OUT OF DODGE!

Yep. Sounds like a good plan to me :)
  • I am trying to laugh at your expense, but when I was nine my parents gave me two Sasha dolls, and I've been a closet doll lover ever since.

I also own two porcelain dolls made about 1904 which belonged to my grandmother and her sister. Their names are Violet Maybelle and Benjamin Arthur. *cough* And then there is the porcelain/cloth body Victorian reproduction doll I whined for until my parents gave in. And...

They are all at my mom's house so I don't have to admit to my problem.
    • P.S. The Sasha dolls are ball-jointed, arm/leg/neck only. Made them far more fun than regular US dolls, which can only flail in scissoring motions.
    • HAH! The secrets out. Deny it if you must but now we know that the truth is out there....at your mothers no less ~__^

Love the names of your grandmother and her sisters dolls!

That's great *^__^*!!! You know...I've never been much of a doll person but I what I think has happened is that I have become frustrated with the action figures (LoTR, 300, FF etc.) because they are so restricted in mobility ...and you can't actually dress them up worth shite.

I am getting the appeal of these things really fast. My JDoll was a bust...looks pretty but the same problem as Barbies...that scissor motion thing AND she doesn't bend at all...so even sitting her down is a pain! I took a much closer look at the obitsu and found I played with them a lot...really really uber possible and just a hoot....which brings me to these bjds which just take it up a notch or few.
  • Heh. I love the hair!!!

I think I had the original/commoner's version of these dolls. I had a whole pile of the Marx dolls in the Johnny West series. *grin*

I have done enough prowling around doll forums to discover that people customize these guys not just for characters in their original stories but they do anime and film characters. When I saw a Sephiroth I just about oozed out of my chair. Not that I want one...mind...but the idea that you CAN is amazing. Currently there are a bunch of people waiting on Zack heads...oh lordy....

ANYway yes..as for those Marx dolls...you know howbadly that dates us ...right? >D !!!
  • These are the kind of dolls where you have to buy everything separately right? Body, hair and eyes and clothes?

Pira, what have you gotten yourself into! XD The expense alone is astronomic.

Well you CAN buy everything separate...the idea is that they are customizable. The first three I bought are Chinese (yes...you read that correctly...3........you can start laughing now)....so they are cheaper than the Japanese variety...or some of the Korean ones.

I purchased 2 MSD (45cm) doll full sets but bought new wigs, eyes and clothing for both...and will make more of the latter. I just didn't want them sitting around nude. When this guy arrived I realized I don't want his fullset clothing on him...in part because I don't want his white skin stained with the black faux leather.

ANYway....#3 (60 cm cat boy) I ordered with only eyes/face-up (painted)....I have ordered a wig and will deal with clothing as I go along. He won't arrive until October.

#4 I am still waiting on confirmation. She' Korean. She's only eyes and face- up and cost as much as the first two msds with fullsets combined.

....My husband is laughing his ass off at how ...get this...*cute I am* playing with dolls.

Men confound me. I thought I would get chewed out....but I think what has happened was I just tossed away another trip to Japan in the near future and he's happy to keep me at home playing with my toys. *snort*

Insane? Absolutely off my freaking head. On the otherhand...I take solice in the fact that I have no interest in those $2000 dolls.....not that it matters after a while. The logic of dolly economics confounds even me.....*nods*
      • You bought 3 dolls? Okay, I think I can excused for an evil grin or two^_^

A 60cm catboy? That one's big. I demand pics once you get your hands on him.

        I suspect your husband's glad to have you home-bound for a while^^

Man, still these dolls are expensive. Sure you want to enter into a new obsession? Or maybe it's too late to ask that! Where are you ordering these dolls from? I'm curious.
        • 4.

          I actually purchased 4.

Evil grinning should be about now disolving into manical laughter and you falling off your chair...

Oh trust me....one of the reasons to actually get into this particular flavour of madness is so you take photos of them *chuckles*

Actually it has totally distracted me from life as I know it... I haven't been this madly engaged in something in YEARS (sort of like LoTRs all OVER again but 43-61 cm tall) >D

My husband....omg....he of course hasn't seen a single one of these guys yet as only one of them is home ~ but he's so used to me being obessed with weird stuff that he's sort of torn ....he's happy I'm happy...and he's happy it's keeping me close to home...but wtf ...they're DOLLS!

I am looking forward to the day he actually claps his eyes on them. I am also working REALLY hard to balance the genders in my herd (what do you call a bunch of dolls...a flock, a passle, a gaggle??)...if I have a few totally beautious girls on hand maybe he won't notice the boys...

...how I hide a 61 cm tall cat boy of course is going to be the question...BUT they are all so pretty that he'll probably assume they are all girls and some are just better endowed on top than others :P

Do I want to enter into the obsession? You are right...I think I'm well past the point of no return...although people do sell dolls for a fair buck if I decide to beat a hasty retreat.

Ah well...no Japan in 2009 for me. *oddly enough I'm not upset*

As for where I'm ordering them from ~ that all depends on the make. I ordered my first from a seller in Denver Colorado (denver doll emporium)...and kicked myself a million times because there is a Canadian distributor (Featherfall.ca)...I ordered 2 from her. #4 is a limited exclusive model to a seller in the US (california I think) whose forum I poke about in with my Obitsus (he sells those too) and GODS she's so beautiful.

I'll bore you with the details later when she arrives...

I will be wanting a #5 but will wait.... and have ideas of which one and might at that point go directely to a Korean seller......depending on what the model is. I'm in no hurry to decide. I can want sun up to sun down but I have to be realistic. It will probably be a tiny one (14 cm) or another boy....but a happy one (I really want one with a gentle smile) like THIS guy.
          • I actually purchased 4. Evil grinning should be about now disolving into manical laughter and you falling off your chair.

            *dies laughing*
I checked those doll sites you gave me. I can see now why you won't be able to afford a trip to Japan next year. Maybe it's a good thing too. You know you won't be able to resist searching for doll shops there^_~

Actually it has totally distracted me from life as I know it... I haven't been this madly engaged in something in YEARS (sort of like LoTRs all OVER again but 43-61 cm tall)

Hey, if it makes you happy (and doesn't bankcrupt you) I say go for it.

I am looking forward to the day he actually claps his eyes on them. I am also working REALLY hard to balance the genders in my herd

Surely he must be used to your yaoi tendencies by now. Would he really be surprised?

(what do you call a bunch of dolls...a flock, a passle, a gaggle??)

            *wicked grin*
A harem. A male harem! XD

I'm kind of amused that the last doll is wearing a school boy uniform. Guess fanboys aren't the only ones with fantasies.
  • I've been a bit late in responding but let me get my immediate reaction out of the way right off.

    *DROOL*

I never was really contemplating Hid until now. Damn you. Dx
Now I must decide between one of three DZ deliciousness (Megi, Mo, Hid) OR the double-jointed Dollmore MSD goodness (tan Pado). @__@

I cant' wait to see him all clothes and even more gorgeous. *__*
    • Thank-you for your drooliness.

Please excuse MY tardiness of responding...I have discovered just how much of a time suck dolls and doll forums are....wow.

Wait till you see him with dark eyes....will post those pix today. I took the plunge and changed them...as I find the red ones too much for me....mind you I'm waiting on another set for him what are reddish but glow warmly instead of intensely for when I want to tweek his look.

Ah yes....double-jointedness....so utterly appealing. *looks as Pado*....How HANDSOME he is! I'm currently saving up for a Lati Red K...but those monies might always get sucked back in another Dollie ambush.

*need to find my backbone and sense of restraint..seem to have misplaced it!*
